A Raja was mention in letter : Justice Regupathi
CHENNAI: Reiterating his claim that the name of former Union minister A Raja was mentioned in a letter sent by him to the then Madras high court Chief Justice HL Gokhale, retired judge R Regupathi on Saturday told reporters that it was also mentioned in a recent order of the high court.
Justice Regupathi was referring to the letter appended by a division bench of the Madras high court in its recent order suspending advocate RK Chandramohen as chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the HC order suspending Chandramohen.
Disposing of a petition by a lawyer, the bench had appended a portion of a letter written by Justice Regupathi, who had claimed that Chandramohen had entered his chamber last year and pleaded that the case of a father and son duo, accused in a marks scandal case in Puducherry, for anticipatory bail be considered favourably as they were "family friends of a Union minister by the name Raja."
Regupathi, in his letter to Justice Gokhale dated July 7, 2009, had said he had discouraged such conduct of Chandramohen and the case would be disposed of in accordance with law if it was listed before him. Facing criticism on the controversy, former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan had insisted that the minister's name was not mentioned by Justice Gokhale in his report to him.
Justice Gokhale, now a sitting Supreme Court judge, contradicted Balakrishnan's claim earlier this week, saying Raja's name was indeed mentioned in the letter.
In an answer to a question, Justice Regupathi said he was neither "scared nor confused" and that that he had never sought security from anyone.
